Everything I’ve Done

Designing and publishing RPGs isn’t just my bread and butter; it’s my passion. Actually, as it stands right now, it’s only my passion. But that’s not the point. If you’re interested in checking out some of my earlier work (where available), you can see my entire RPG career below in chronological order.

Writer/Designer (as Todd Crapper)

You always start with your main body of work in the skill you’re best at and here we are. These are the projects born from sweat and nose bleeds as both the writer and lead designer under my actual name.

dialm_finalcoverDial M for Monster (October 2016)

Publisher: Broken Ruler Games
System: ScreenPlay
Type: Treatment/adventure
Something evil lurks in the darkened halls of a major metropolitan museum late one night when the patrons are gone. No one knows what it is, but it has claimed two lives already and is hungry for more carnage. The danger is all the more surreal because the monster that threatens your lives… was created by you. This 1950s drive-in horror/mystery treatment for ScreenPlay allows players to create the monster as they play for a new story every time you play. Perfect for that Hallowe’en one shot.

Shadow, Sword & Spell (2017-current)

Publisher: Rogue Games
System: 12 Degrees
Type: A series of ongoing blog posts supporting SS&S
Beginning with an article introducing the World to the Guardians of Attakosh, a terrorist-like cell of book burners, I’m working on some supplemental blog posts supporting the upcoming next edition of this fantasy pulp RPG created by Richard Iorio II. As more content is added to Rogue Games’ Dispatches page, I’ll be sure to add them below.

Trump_Putin_March2017coverTrump/Putin

Publisher: Ginger Goat
System: Original system
Type: 2-player RPG
Designed as a hack of Josh Jordan’s The Sky Is Grey And You Are Distressed, this is a project my wife and I worked on together (which has been a really nice bonus). It’s a political satire of the relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin that focuses solely on these two and the true nature of their connections, be they true or over exaggerated. Because both of these world leaders bring a lot of emotional baggage with them, we wanted to make sure this game did not highlight their countries, political parties, or serious real world issues and rather play out as a satire of the individuals.

215094The Imposters (“The Light Of Day”)

Publisher: Ginger Goat
System: Original systems
Type: Anthology of assorted tabletop RPGs and LARPs

Originally submitted as a Game Chef 2016 entry, this mini-game looked like it was going to sit in limbo as I tried to sort out what to do with it. That is until Ginger Goat’s Josh Jordan put out an open call for mini-games involving government espionage. I’m happy to say The Light Of Day has been accepted into this collection along with other really interesting games from Banana Chan, Nick Wendig, Alex Carlson, and Josh himself. Plus it’s been edited by Jeremy Morgan, who has worked on some Fate stuff in the past, so you know they’re taking it seriously. It’s a game of an inside job to swipe top secret data from a government organization and get in the hands of a reporter told through traditional face-to-face interaction describing everyone’s surface actions and secret text messages to detail hidden ploys to get the job done.

Writer/Designer (as The Warden)

For a brief period in the early 2010’s, I started working under a pseudonym around the same time as starting up Broken Ruler Games. It was really to sound a lot more bad ass, particularly with a game like Killshot, until I started to feel the time was right to start working as me and not some alternate personality.

Under the Hood (2011-2014)

This is my ongoing series focusing on roleplaying mechanics. Posted every Sunday (or most Sundays) on Roleplayers Chronicle.

Killshot (An Assassin’s Journal, Direction, The Director’s Cut) (2012)

KillShot-Logo_v1Publisher: Broken Ruler Games
System: Optional System
Type: Core rulebooks
My first effort creating an original RPG, players take on the role of professional assassins taking on jobs to kill marks. First published use of the Optional System and my first print project. (OK, print on demand, but it still counts in the 21st Century.) Killshot: The Director’s Cut was a recipient of the 2013 ENnies Judges Spotlight.

Publisher: Mystical Throne Entertainment
System: Savage Worlds

Xenopedia (Mercenary Breeed, 2nd Edition) (April 2014)

Publisher: Mystical Throne Entertainment
Systems: Savage Worlds, Legends, Entropic Gaming System
Type: Supplement
When I was first hired for this project – a revised and expanded look at MTE’s best-selling science fantasy setting – the demand was for crazy, bizarre aliens from the distant reaches of the Argo Galaxy. Co-written with Aaron Huss, this alien supplement supports the Mercenary Breed setting but also works as a stand-alone “monster guide” for creepy critters from every planet other than Earth. Adapted for Savage Worlds, Legends, and MTE’s original system, the EGS.

Editing/Development

As part of my plans to diversify my talents and grow as a designer, I’ve taken on a few proofing jobs here and there over the years. Many of them will not be listed here because it wasn’t until working on Beyond the Firelight: Goody Eleanor that my role grew from simple reviewing the text for grammar and spelling to become an integral part of the creative process.

screen-shot-2016-10-03-at-10-23-29-pmBeyond the Firelight (November 2016)

Publisher: Mystical Throne Entertainment
System: Original
Type: Story game
Beyond the Firelight is a tabletop roleplaying game (RPG) of historical horror. It gathers its influences from traditional folklore and stories that kept the people from straying off the moral path or going out at night. It can be a game of investigation or survival as you and your friends attempt to discover what lies beyond the darkness around you.

206578Little Heroes: The Lost Faery (March 2017)

Publisher: Mystical Throne Entertainment
System: Original
Type: Story game; quick-start edition
Applying the same mechanics as Beyond the Firelight (but with a lot less doom and gloom), Little Heroes is a storytelling game for the whole family with an emphasis on young kids. Its author, Aaron Huss, has 5 kids at home so it’s very safe to say if he can play it with his kids, the rest of us are golden. (NOTE: The full version of Little Heroes went on to earn a 2017 ENnies nomination for Best Family Game.)

Graphic Design/Layout

Is there nothing I can’t do? Well, actually, there’s a lot of things I can’t do. But graphic design and book layout for other RPGs than my own is the third skill of this trifecta I’ve provided to the community.

Sword’s Edge (September/October 2017)

T1UgANZPublisher: Sword’s Edge Publishing
Graphics: Cover design, character sheets
Along with being a member of Fraser Ronald’s roleplaying group (and therefore being on the front lines of playtesting for this game), I re-designed the cover based on the initial version put together by Fraser for both the ashcan and final version made possible by his Kickstarter earlier in the year. Putting the character sheet together was an added bonus brought on by feedback from the other players in our group to make it not only a means of tracking your character’s qualities but a handy tool for learning the game as you play.
